Weight Loss for People with Sleep Disorders

We know that there is a relationship between being overweight and respiratory disturbances during sleep. Obesity has been identified as the single most significant risk factor known for sleep apnea. That is why we have developed a weight control program specifically designed for people with sleep apnea, which we have lightheartedly named "Wake Watchers."

Several years ago, we began examining the effects of weight loss on sleep apnea by participating with three World renowned academic institutions in a sub-study of the "LOOK AHEAD" program - a Federally-funded study of the effects of weight loss in people with Type II diabetes that is sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Since then we've found multiple research studies published in reputable medical journals showing that weight loss is an effective treatment for sleep apnea in people with Type II diabetes who are overweight. Therefore, we have extended our research interests to our clinical center, where we have worked closely with patients to develop a weight control program exclusively for people with sleep apnea. We are the one and only Wake Watchers brand program for people with sleep disorders who need to lose weight.

The Wake Watchers program involves one-to-one counseling with a sleep clinician, programmed and prepared meals made by Medifast, and lifestyle enhancements. The program strives to achieve weight loss that results in an improvement in breathing during sleep – so you can sleep better, feel better during the day, and enjoy optimal health.
